In most cases, the removal of Asbestos Containing Materials (ACMs) is a last resort. However, in some circumstances, it is always a necessity. According to HSG227:

“Where it is not practical to repair, enclose or encapsulate the ACMs, they will need to be removed. ACMs will also need to be removed if the area is due to undergo refurbishment which will disturb the ACM, or where a building is going to be demolished.”

In short, ACMs will need to be removed if:

• They cannot be repaired, enclosed or encapsulated
• If the area where the ACMs are located is due for refurbishment work that will disturb them
• If the building is to be demolished

The exact asbestos removal process will be different from site to site based on the type of ACMs to be removed, as well as the nature of the site itself. Some ACMs, such as asbestos concrete, can be removed by an unlicensed contractor, whereas higher-risk materials will need licensed removal.

• The establishment of ventilated enclosures
• Air sampling and monitoring
